Start Your Ecommerce Brand Without Tech or High Costs

Starting an ecommerce brand used to mean buying inventory before you'd sold a single unit — guessing at sizes, colors and quantities, then hoping the guess was right. Print-on-demand removes that bet: you publish a product, a customer buys it, and only then does anything get produced. This page covers why that model works, what you need before you start, and what your first week actually looks like with DropShipPOD.

Why print-on-demand first

No inventory risk. Nothing is produced until an order comes in, so there's no stack of sizes and colors sitting in a closet hoping to sell.

Launch with designs, not stock. What you need on day one is artwork and a catalog to put it on — not a purchase order, a storage unit, or a bulk manufacturing minimum.

Change your mind for free. A design that isn't selling costs nothing to retire. A product line that never earned back its inventory cost is a much harder problem to walk away from.

What you need

Three things get you to a working store:

  • A Shopify store. If you don't have one yet, Shopify's own signup gets you there in minutes.
  • Designs. Bring print-ready artwork of your own, or start from our design library — you don't need a designer on staff to launch.
  • The DropShipPOD app. Installed from the Shopify App Store, it connects your store to the catalog, production and fulfillment described below.

Your first week

  1. Pick a niche. A specific audience — a sport, a hobby, a cause — sells better than a generic "shirts for everyone" store. Browse the catalog to see what's available to build around.
  2. Import products. Bring blanks into your Shopify admin from inside the app — no manual listing, no product photography required.
  3. Set your markup. Retail price is base cost plus your markup. You choose the number, and the app won't publish a product until you have.
  4. Publish. Push the finished listings live to your storefront.
  5. Make your first marketing push. Tell the audience you picked in step one that the store exists — a post, a link in bio, an email to people who already know you.

The how it works page walks through the same steps in more detail, from picking products through an order landing in production.

What it costs

There's no subscription to start — importing and publishing products is free. When a customer places an order, your saved card is charged the base cost, production plus shipping, and everything above that is yours. Full detail, including exactly when you're charged, is on the pricing page.

Grow from there

Once the store is live, two additions build on what you already have:

  • Add personalization with Custy. Let shoppers add their own text, cliparts and uploads on your product pages, through the same production pipeline you're already using.
  • Watch the video library. Walkthroughs on import, markup, publishing and beyond, whenever you want to see a step before you run it yourself.
